➤ What are Sunflower Seeds?

Sunflower seeds are the fruits of the sunflower plant which are collected from the large head of the flower. You would be surprised to know that a single flower holds up to 2000 seeds.

These seeds are covered with black-and-white striped shells which should be removed before eating.

These tiny seeds are loaded with healthy fats, proteins, fibre and numerous important nutrients like - vitamins, minerals and plant-based compounds.

Therefore, they play a very crucial role in reducing the risk of many health conditions, such as - diabetes, PCOS, heart disease, etc.

You must have seen both raw and roasted Sunflower seeds in shops or on online selling platforms. This must have left you wondering which version of sunflower seeds is a healthier option to choose, right? The answer is: you can consume both of them as they are equally nutritious. However, they are roasted especially to magnify their crunchy, nutty flavour.

Sunflowers are grown basically to produce two types of crops - [1] sunflower seeds for eating purpose and [2] Sunflower oil for cooking purpose.

➤ Why should we incorporate Sunflower Seeds into our diet?

Packed with lots of much-needed nutrients, such as - omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, protein, iron, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, sunflower seeds are considered elixir for people of all age... so much so that the prevalence of these seeds has suddenly sprung to an unexpected height within a few years.

The tiny seeds are now embraced as "Superfood Seeds" by people across the globe. And, this single reason is solid enough to incorporate sunflower seeds into our diet on a daily basis.

To be precise, Zinc, Magnesium, Selenium, Vitamin E, Protein, Fibre and Fatty Acids - such important nutrients are found in these tiny seeds and that also, in a higher amount.

The rich presence of these nutrients makes these tiny seeds very nutritious to consume and replenish your body with vital nutrients. Even a handful of these seeds is capable enough to fill you in with numerous vital nutrients - which are considered quintessential to maintain proper health.

So far, I didn't find any reason that can prove why we shouldn't consume sunflower seeds daily.

➤ Their Nutritional Value

Like I said above, the Nutrient-Powerhouse Sunflower Seeds are a rich source of lots of nutrients which are important for proper health management, such as:

⬤ Healthy fats like Omega-3 fatty acid

⬤ Vitamins like Vitamin E and Vitamin B6

⬤ Minerals like - zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, magnesium

⬤ Iron, Fibre, Protein, Carbohydrates, Niacin, and so on.

However, we can't ignore that apart from these nutritional components, these seeds are also loaded with high calories. So, if they are taken in moderate or recommended amount, they can do wonders.

➤ Why Sunflower Seeds are beneficial for women with PCOS?

Sunflower seeds are piled up with many essential nutrients that our bodies crave for to balance the flow of reproductive hormones. These nutrients are also quintessential to suppress the symptoms of PCOS.

These seeds are a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc - which are considered an important stimulator of Progesterone hormones and regulator of female reproductive hormones.

In addition, sunflower seeds also contain a high level of "Selenium" which is essential for liver detoxification and thyroid hormone regulation.

In PCOS, the insulin level spikes dramatically whenever one eats carbohydrates. However, sunflower seeds contain a negligible amount of carbohydrates, making them healthy enough to include in your diet.

These seeds have recently become a hot topic of discussion among women living with PCOS. And the reason is also quite genuine - Seeds are considered "Superfood" irrespective of whether it is chia seed, pumpkin seed, watermelon seed, sesame seed, flax seed or sunflower seed - because of their high nutritional content.

➤ Their Health Benefits

A handful of sunflower seeds can offer you a plethora of health benefits.

⧭ Good source of antioxidants - Vitamin E and Selenium are antioxidants which are very essential to protect your body-cell from free radical damage. And, sunflower seeds are piled up with a high amount of both Vitamin E and Selenium, thereby making these seeds natural remedy to prevent many chronic diseases.

These seeds are also rich in plant-based compounds, such as flavonoids and phenolic - which are considered good antioxidants.

⧭ Good for heart disease - Sunflower seeds are a good source of magnesium - which helps in reducing blood pressure level in a natural way.

These seeds also contain unsaturated fatty acids - which are again very helpful in maintaining lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.

⧭ Good source of fibre - Sunflower seeds are high in fibre content. And we all know that daily consumption of fibre is required for healthy bowels as fibre promotes smooth bowel movement.

In addition, fibre is also helpful in blood sugar, cholesterol and weight management.

⧭ Good source of Protein - Protein is considered the building block of our body. And these tiny seeds are also packed with good source of protein. This makes these seeds very important for our tissue, muscles, bones, skin and cartilage repair, growth and maintenance.

⧭ Good for diabetic people - The plant-based compounds found in sunflower seeds play a crucial role in lowering blood sugar level. The research report shows that 30 gram of daily consumption of these seeds can reduce one's blood sugar level by almost 10% within 6 months.

⧭ Good for women with PCOS - Like I explained above, sunflower seeds contain a high amount of several essential nutrients [like - selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, etc] that have the ability to do wonders for women living with PCOS.

➤ Daily recommended dose of Sunflowers Seeds

The exact amount of sunflower seeds one should consume daily is likely to vary from person to person depending on various factors like - height, weight, age, health condition and so on.

Having said that, one can still have 1/4 cup or 4 tablespoons of sunflower seeds daily - said by registered dietician Alissa Rumsey

Researchers say that sunflower seeds are also rich in healthy fat. Although healthy fat is good for our health, excess consumption of it can lead to weight gain. Therefore, one shouldn't go overboard and gobble them up as this can negatively affect their overall health.

➤ How to include Sunflower Seeds in our diet?

The superfood sunflower seeds already have a savoury nutty flavour, making them delicious enough to eat alone.

However, there are still multiple ways to consume the goodness of these seeds on a regular basis in case someone doesn't like consuming them alone.

⧭ With Bowlful of flakes, nuts and seeds - This one is my personal favourite. You can sprinkle the required amount of sunflower seeds over your favourite fruit or yoghurt parfait or smoothie - whichever you prefer. As for me, I add 2 teaspoons of sunflower seeds along with muesli, flakes, oats, nuts, fruits and other seeds in a bowlful of curd.

⧭ With fruits, vegetable or chicken salads - The easiest way to eat them daily is sprinkling them on your salads - whichever you eat daily - as salads are considered a part of our stable diet.

⧭ With sprouts - Needless to say, how nutritious a handful of sprouts can be for our body. And if a few teaspoons of sunflower seeds are mixed with the sprout, they can enhance sprouts' nutritious value even further.

⧭ Burgers and sandwiches - You can add a teaspoon of sunflower seeds inside your burger or sandwiches. Adding seeds will give your food a unique crunchy flavour.

⧭ With baked food - While baking cookies, muffins or protein bar, a little number of sunflower seeds will only multiple their flavour. So, try it out.

There are several other ways as well. But, it will take a long to add them all here. However, you can experiment with sunflower seeds daily. So, all the best buddy 👍

Seeds are the ultimate foods. I just got to know about sunflower seeds through Krazy reviews. One of my best seeds is the cashew nut. I hope to see a review on the cashew nut in your blog.
